STUDENTS RALLY AGAINST ISRAELI MILITARY ATTACK ON PALESTINE
Jakarta, Dec 29 (ANTARA) - As many as 1,000 students belonging to various organizations demonstrated at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circles here on Monday to protest against Isreal's recent military attack on Palestine.
Coordinated by such student organizations as the Indonesian Muslim Action Front (KAMMI) and the Jakarta State Islamic University's Student Executive Body (BEM Universitas Islam Negeri Jakarta), the demonstrators carried large banners which among other things said "Go to Hell Israeli," "Israel is Zionist, America is Terrorist". They also shouted words condemning Israeli's attack on Palestinian territory.
Some 500 officers from the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Headquarters, the Central Jakarta Police Precinct and the Gambir Sub-Precinct were on hand to maintain order.
One of the protesters, Margaretta Chrisnasari, said the action was staged to draw the world's attention again to and rekindle international solidarity for the Palestinian people who continued to be colonized by Israel.
The protest was also intended to pressure the Egyptian government to open its territorial border with Palestine and help the Palestinians. The protesters hoped he Egyptian government would not fall into the trap of Israeli's scenario.
"This action also aims to mobilize the support of people around the world for the Palestine people's freedom struggle," Margaretta added.
