BALI PROJECT TO RECYCLE GARBAGE INTO ELECTRICIIY YIELDS TWO MW

Denpasar, Dec 29 (ANTARA) - The trial run of a project to recycle garbage into electrical energy at Denpasar's Sawung garbage dump has yielded two megawatts of electricity, a local official said.
"The trial run was still hampered by a shortage of garbage supply because not all of Bali's four districts/municipalities that had been expected to dispose of their garbage at the Sawung dump did so," Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika said here Monday.
He said the four districts/municipalities that were supposed to have sent their garbage to the Sawung dump were Denpasar city, Badung, Tabanan and Gianyar districts.
Altogether they were to supply 500 tons of garbage per day but so far only 100 tons per day were sent to the Suwung dump, namely from Danpasar city, Tabanan and Badung districts.
"If all the districts/municipalities dump their waste at Suwung, more electrical energy can be produced, and the garbage problem would have been solved," the governor said.
The garbage recycling project is being implemented by state electricity company PT PLN in cooperation with PT Navigate Organic Energy Indonesia (NOEI).
The production of electrical energy from garbage would enable PLN to reduce its need for fuel to generate electricity.
Earlier, on a separate occasion, Sudirman, PT PLN 's general manager for distribution in Bali, had said the project to recycle garbage into electricity was meant to produce up to 9.6 MW until 2010 and thus save a total of Rp180.7 billion which would otherwise have to be spent on fuel oil every year.
In the project's first phase which began last October 1, 2008, two MW would be produced or a saving of Rp6.1 billion worth of fuel oil per year.
In the project's second phase starting on June 1, 2009, electricity production would increase to four megawatts or a saving of Rp 48.6 billion per year
On July 1, 2010, the project would enter its third phase to produce 9.6 MW or enable the saving of Rp 180.7 billion per year. Then, the project at Suwung on the outskirts of Denpasar could be linked to the Bali electricity distribution system.
The US$30-million project is designed to process 800 tons of garbage per day from four districts/municipalities in Bali.
The investor had imported a sophisticated gas detection device from England capable of measuring the gas content of garbage before it is recycled.
Built starting in late in 2005, the garbage recycling plant stands on a 10-hectare plot of land outside Denpasar city.
