ISRAEL MAIN CAUSE OF TERRORISM: PARTY EXECUTIVE
Jakarta, Dec 29 (ANTARA) - Former chairman of the Indonesian Islamic Students Association (HMI) and Democrat Party Executive Anas Urbaningrum said Israel's persistent brutality and ferocity had been the main causes of the developments in international terrorism.
"The Israeli terror behavior is a fertile soil for the development of global terrorism," Urbaningrum said here on Monday in response to Israeli attacks on Palestine which killed over 200 civilians.
Israel has been launching military attacks since last Saturday on the Gaza Strip on the pretext that it was bombing Hamas militia targets in revenge of its rocket attacks into Israel.
Urbaningrum condemned the Israeli military onslaught which he said was a barbaric and brutal slaughter of the Palestinian people.
"This is just an obvious proof that Israel is a wild and brutal terrorist state," he stressed.
Therefore, he called on the United Nations to take firm action against Israel in order that the Zionist country would not turn to be increasingly brutal.
"The United Nations has tolerated the brutality and arrogance of Israel for too long," he added.
In the meantime, former president Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) on Monday criticized the Israeli military attacks on Palestine.
In a press statement made available to ANTARA, Gus Dur said conservative groups in Israel were behind the deadly attacks.
"The violent actions by the Israeli conservatives will never be able to resolve the conflict in the region," he said.
He said efforts to solve a problem by resorting to violence would only lead Israel and Palestine to destruction.
Gus Dur said that the Israeli military actions violated human rights and the principles of peace now being sought in the Middle East, particularly in Palestine.
"Israel cannot say its military onslaught was merely a reaction to the previous Hamas' attacks or as a form of self-defence," he said.
Therefore, Gus Dur said, the Israeli military should immediately stop its attacks and withdraw from the Palestinian region, the Gaza Strip, in particular. ***7***
