STUDENTS STAGE ANTI-ISRAELI RALLIES IN MANY CITIES

Jakarta, Dec. 30 (ANTARA) - Rallies condemning Israeli attacks which killed over 300 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, were staged by university students in many Indonesian cities during the past two days.

The student demonstrations took place in Palangka Raya (Central Kalimantan), Surabaya and Gresik (East Java), Semarang and Magelang (Central Java), Lebak (Banten Province), Jakarta, Banda Aceh (Naggroe Aceh Darussalam), and Palembang (South Sumatra) on Monday and Tuesday.

Around 300 university students grouped in the Muslim Students' Action Front (KAMMI) and the Surabaya Campus Preaching Council Forum (FSLDK) staged a rally in front of the US consulate general in East Java's provincial capital to demonstrate their solidarity with the Palestinian people on Tuesday.

The international community knew about the conflict in Palestine but they did not do any concrete action, chairman of KAMMI Surabaya, Agus Kusdianto, said.

"So far, only the Palestinian people have been defending Al Quds (Jerusalem) for more than 50 years," he said.

He said Israel had in its latest attacks killed women and children who were supposed to be protected in a war.

Israel also destroyed the Islamic University in Gaza, health facilities, human settlements and other public places, he said.
Therefore, KAMMI condemned Israel and its allies, he said.

In Magelang (Central Java), on Tuesday, members of the Solidarity of Muslim Students who Care for Palestine (SM3P2) strongly condemned the aggression of Israeli military in the Gaza Strip.

In Banda Aceh, Aceh Province, KAMMI members on Monday decried Israel for murdering Palestinians en masse.

Muaz Munawar, secretary general of KAMMI in Aceh, urged the Aceh people to collect funds for Palestinian freedom fighters in their fight against Jewish soldiers.

"The Islamic New Year 1430 Hijriah is a moment for Muslims in Aceh to help their brothers who are being oppressed by the Jews," he said.

The Indonesian government should push the United Nations to sanction Israel, he said.

In Jakarta, last Monday, about 1,000 people, including university students, gathered at the HI circle, Central Jakarta, to express their condemnation of the Israeli attacks and their support to the Palestinians' struggle for independence.

In Palembang, on Tuesday, a university student group called the Movement of Care for Palestine (GP2) of the Raden Fatah Islamic Institute, called for a boycott of Jewish products.
