ANTI-GRAFT BODY RECOVERED RP410.24 BILLION IN STATE ASSETS

Jakarta, Dec 30 (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has successfully recovered state money valued at Rp410.24 billion in 2008, its chairman Antasari Azhar said here on Tuesday.

He said that the state assets were recovered from the handling of corruption and gratification cases during the whole year of 2008.

Data available with the office of the Corruption Eradication Commission indicated that of the recovered state money, Rp390.9 billion came from corruption cases, Rp8.1 billion from seized assets, Rp3.8 billion in gratification, Rp4.2 billion from confiscation, Rp2.6 billion from fines, Rp537.2 income from financial institutions' services and Rp260 thousands were collected from court administration fees.

During the year of 2008, the anti-graft body received a budget of Rp232.6 billion. Of the total, the anti-corruption commission only spent Rp188.8 billion.

Antasari Azhar stressed that his institution did not intentionally economize the use of the budget where its expenditure turned out to be smaller than the available funds.

He said the KPK was not an institution which always tried to spend all its budget funds merely to avoid a remainder in its budget at the end of the budget year.

"We should stop this practice," he said apparently referring to other government departments and agencies in general.
