PRESIDENT ASKS BPS TO STUDY IMPACT OF FUEL OIL PRICE CUTS

Jakarta, Dec 30 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) to study the impact of the recent premium gasoline and diesel oil price cuts on the production sector, a minister said.

"The president has asked BPS to study the impact of the gasoline and diesel oil price cuts. The prices have been lowered but why have transportation fares not gone down or dropped not proportionately. We are now focusing on that and studying it again," Energy abd Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said at the presidenital office here Tuesday.

The minister said he had met the president and reported to the latter an increase in the world crude price by two US dollars per barrel to US$38 per barrel.

He said his ministry was still monitoring the movements of the world crude price to see its impact on the domestic fuel oil prices.

"We continue to keep abreast of the price developments. I think we will be able to see the direction of the price in January," Yusgiantoro said.

He said the president was currently giving priority to observing the impact of the oil price cuts this month.

The government had earlier expected public transportation fares would be lowered following its decision recently to cut fuel oil prices amid the steep fall in the world crude price from US$147 per barrel in July to about US$40 per barrel.

It lowered the prices of premium gasoline from Rp5,500 per liter to Rp5,000 and diesel oil from Rp5,500 a liter to Rp4,800 per liter.

The lowering of the premium gasoline price was decided for the second time this month. On December 1, it also cut gasoline price from Rp6,000 per liter to Rp5,500.

As subsidized premium and diesel oil prices were lowered, calls for cuts in public transportation were also raised by the public.
