WEST SUMATRA EXPORTS 98.4 TONS OF FRESH FISH TO FOUR COUNTRIES

Padang, W Sumatra, Dec 31 (ANTARA)- West Sumatra province during 2008 exported 98.4 tons of fresh fish including Tuna and grouper fish, to four countries, the provincial governor, Gamawan Fauzi said here on Tuesday.

The fish export destinations are Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the United States, the governor said.
The fish export processes were handled by four factories namely PT Sinar Argo Marine Utama (SAMU), PT Denpo Andalas Samudra (DAS), PT Pejuang Andalas Samudera (PAS), and Sumatera Budidaya Marine (SBM), he said.
According to him, the fish export volume was up by 22.78 tons compared to the 2007 total fish export.
Gamawan said further that the provincial fish export in 2006 reached 308.2 tons with countries of destination were Japan and Hong Kong.
In the meantime, the provincial fishermen were also expected to actively supply fish to PT Dempo Andalas Samudera, a processing fish factory located at the Bungus tuna fish port in the provincial capital of Padang.
This factory was still in need of much fish for export purpose, the governor said on a separate occasion previously.
PT Dempo now only receives about three tons of fish supply daily, against its daily capacity to receive some 20 tons, the governor said, noting that this company also buys parrot fish (Nila) from the local fishermen.
According to Gamawan Fauzi, PT Dempo which among other things exported fish to Florida (US), could process fish for export which is edible for two year-consumption.
"This fish factory's capacity should be made of use maximally to absorb local fish," the governor said, hoping that the fishermen living at the coastal areas like in Padang, other districts of Padang Pariaman, Pasaman Barat, Pesisir Selatan, and Agam could increase their products.
In addition, PT Dempo also received fish supply from 65 fishing boats which were previously operating in Muara Baru, Jakarta.
The 65 fishing boats have so far been operating in Mentawai Islands waters to catch more Tuna fish, he added.
