EARTHQUAKE FREQUENCY IN ACEH DOWN
Banda Aceh, Dec 31 (ANTARA) - The frequency of earthquakes in Nanggroe Aceh Darusslam (NAD) province has dropped from 8-10 times per day in 2007 to 5-7 times per day in 2008, according to the local meteorology and geophysics agency (BMG) on Wednesday.
Syahnan, a BMG spokesman, said moderate quakes measuring below 4 on the Richter scale frequently occurred at sea off Aceh's west coast but they were not felt by the local people, especially manual laborers.
During the past two years (2007-2008), the strongest earthquake measured 6.9 on the Richter scale while its epicenter was below the seabed, near the island of Simeulue and Sumeulue district, southwest of Banda Aceh.
Syahnan said of 2,218 earthquakes in 2008, only 45 had a magnitude of between 5.1 and 6.9 that were felt by the local people. But in 2007 some 48 of 2.848 temblors were felt.
The frequency of aftershocks following the powerful 9.8 magnitude earthquake on December 26, 2004 in Aceh had continued to drop.
According to Syahnan, the tremors in 2008 in Aceh mostly occurred in January, February, March, April, May, and June, while in 2007 the quakes occurred an avaerage of 200 times per day and continued until October.
"Compared to 2007, the earthquake frequency in 2008 has gone down," Syahnan said.
Indonesia is located in the mid of tectonic plate collision of Indo-Australia, Eurasia and Pacific Plates ans as the results, the country is prone to geologic hazard which are quite disastrous and destructive.
On December 26, 2004 earthquake with its ensuing tsunami swept more than 280,000 people in Aceh to death, flattened or washed out to sea many infrastructures and buildings.
Therefore, Syahnan called on the of Aceh, especially those living along the west coast of the province to remain alert but not to be in panic each time they feel a tremor.
