JAKARTA'S CRIME RATE DOWN 3.02 PERCENT

Jakarta, Dec. 31 (ANTARA) - The crime rate in Jakarta in 2008 dropped by 3.02 percent compared to 2007, Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Wahyono said.

Speaking at a year-end press conference, Wahyono said the police in the capital city had recorded a total of 57,024 criminal offemses during 2008, down from 58,805 in 2007, he said.
Police were able to solve 29,454 cases in 2008, up 17.41 percent from 25,086 a year earlier, he said.
Although the crime rate had declined, the police had noted the numbers of murder, gambling and trafficking cases and of fires had increased.
During 2008, there were 78 murder cases, including seven mutilation cases, an increase of 16.41 percent from 67 murder cases in 2007.
