PURWOKERTO STUDENTS RALLY AGAINST ISRAEL

Purwokerto, Dec 31 (ANTARA) - Hundreds of college and high school students in Purwokerto town, Central Java, hit the streets on Wednesday to protest against Israeli military aggression in the Gaza Strip in Palestinian territory.

The students, grouped in the Palestine Concern Youth Alliance, started the protest rally in front of Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed) campus here at 9 a.m. before marching to state radio station (RRI), about five kilometers away from the campus.
Arriving at the RRI building at 10:30 in the morning, the protesting students forced themselves into the building but were blocked by the police.
However, several representatives of the protesters were allowed to enter the building and asked the radio station to air their petitions.
The rally coordinator Amin Herwanto said Palestine had been colonized by Israel for more than 61 years.
"Even the Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip on Saturday killed more than 350 people and injured 1,050 others, mostly Palestinian civilians," Amin Herwanto said.
Meanwhile, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said in Jakarta on Tuesday that Indonesia had strongly condemned the Israeli air strikes and urged the United Nations to take concrete steps to bring the aggression to an end.
"We invite all parties to help stop the Israeli attacks and we will continue to support the Palestinian struggle," Yudhoyono said.
The president on Monday sent a letter to the United Nations and UN Security Council, calling on the world's bodies to issue a resolution for Israel to halt its strikes on Gaza Strip.
"Indonesia finds it necessary for the UN Security Council to make a formal meeting and issue a resolution to force Israel halt its aggression," Yudhoyono said.
In his letter, President Yudhoyono also called on Israel and Palestine to return to a peace process like they did half year ago to create peace and security at Gaza Strip.
