MINOR QUAKE ROCKS YOGYAKARTA

Yogyakarta, Dec 31 (ANTARA) - A minor earthquake measuring 4.8 on Richter scale jolted Yoyakarta Special Region at 2.19 pm on Wednesday, a geophysics and meteorological official said.

Chief of Data Section of Yogyakarta's Geophysics and Meteorological Office, Agus Wijaya, said on Wednesday the epicenter of the quake was located in the southern coast of Bantul district at 8.06 degrees southern latitude and 110.37 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 km.
"The magnitude of the earthquake is not too strong and could only be felt by some Yogyakarta residents," he said adding that it had no potential to trigger tsunami though its epicenter was near the sea.
He said that his office was still studying the earthquake.
Earlier, two earthquakes respectively measuring 5.9 and 5.1 on the Richter scale hit Bengkulu province on Sumatra.
The local meteorology and geophysics office said the first quake with a magnitude of 5.9 struck at 2.49 a.m. local time with its epicenter located 156 kilometers southwest of Lais at a depth of 10 kilometers below the sea bed, or between 4.42 degrees southern latitude and 100.96 degrees eastern longitude.
The second quake occurred at 3.32 a.m. local time with a magnitude of 5.1, between 4.43 degrees southern latitude and 1001.06 degrees eastern longitude, or some 141 kilometers southwest of Lais. However, there were no reports of damage or casualty in the disaster.
