PDIP OPTIMISTIC ABLE TO GARNER 40 PCT OF VOTES

Gorontalo, Dec 31 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Democratic Party- Struggle (PDIP) is optimistic it can garner 40 percent of the votes in the legislative elections next year by presenting Megawati Soekarnoputri as its presidential candidate.

The director of Pro-Mega Center, Mochtar Mohammad, said here on Wednesday, based on the results of polls by the Indonesia Survey Institute (LSI) in December 2008, the PDIP was predicted to be able to collect 31 percent of the votes at national level.

"If the votes are combined with those from other parties, I am convinced Mega will win (in the presidential election) with a 40 percent margin," the chief of the party's Bekasi branch, said.

He said according to the survey, the Democrat Party would be in second place with 19 percent of the votes and the Golkar Party in the third place with 13 percent of the votes.

He said as a party that was the first to name its presidential candidate, PDIP would draw the support of a number of national figures prepared to become Megawati's running mate.

"Last week, a number of party leaders such as Suryadarma Ali, Prabowo and Hidayat Nur Wahid approached Megawati to explore the possibility of coalescing with PDIP," he said.

Right now, he said, Megawati was intensively conducting road shows in various regions and would be in Manado, North Sulawesi, from January 4 to 8.

Mochtar who was elected as the new mayor of Bekasi recently said based on the results of the LSI survey, in Gorontalo the PDIP would be in the second place after the Golkar Party.
