GARUDA TO OPEN 18 NEW ROUTES IN 2009
Jakarta, Dec 31 (ANTARA) - National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is planning to open 18 new flight routes in 2009 after the arrival of 14 new Boeing 737 NGs it has purchsed, a spokesman said.
Garuda Communications Chief Officer Purjobroto told a year-end press conference here on Wednesday the new routes would among others connect the following cities Jakarta-Tanjungkarang (Lampung), Jakarta-Malang (East Java), Jakarta-Makasar-Kendari (Southeast Sulawesi), Jakarta-Makassar-Gorontalo (Gorontalo), Jakarta-Makassar-Sorong (Papua) and Jakarta-Makassar-Ambon (Maluku).
Purjobroto said that some of the routes were actually old routes which were to be reopened again by Garuda. "The routes will be opened in stages beginning on January 16, 2009," he said.
Garuda has been serving a Yoyakarta-Singapore route since December 16, 2008 three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Other routes such as Jakarta-Tanjungkarang, Jakarta-Malang, Jakarta-Makassar-Kendari and Regional routes such as Surabaya - Hong Kong and Denpasar - Hong Kong will be opened in mid January 2009, he said.
He said that if Garuda operated all of its new airplanes in 2009, it would have a fleet of 68 aircraft.
In the meantime, Garuda will also purchase 10 Boeing 777-300ERs beginning in 2009 as part of its revitalization program until 2013.
"Garuda is expected to have a fleet of 128 airplanes by 2013," he said.
