BI EXPECTS INFLATION TO DROP

Jakarta, Dec 31 (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI) expects the country's inflation rate to drop so that the central bank would be able to cut its key rate.

"We hope inflation can be controlled and drop but how low it will go, let us just wait and see," BI Governor Boediono said after launching the second volume of the new era on fiscal policy here on Wednesday.

He said BI would set the BI Rate on January 6 after considering all factors.

"Later, maybe on January 6, we will have an overall view on how low the right BI rate should be," he said.

On the country's economic growth, Boediono said it had somewhat slowed in the fourth quarter this year.

"We have seen several indicators but all in all it could still grow around six percent in 2008 and this is not bad compared to that of other countries," he said.

For 2009 BI predicts there would be a slowdown due to slower global economic activity resulting in tighter liquidity and sales of goods from Indonesia.

"But if we can strengthen the domestic market such as through a fiscal policy and maintain banking credit growth while inflation is safeguarded to maintain buying power consumption is expected to still continue to push for growth," he said.
