INDONESIA ACHIEVES RICE SELF-SUFFICIENCY
Makassar, Indonesia, Dec 31 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said Indonesia would not import rice in 2009 because its rice production target has been achieved.
"We will not import rice because we have a production surplus of two million tons from South Sulawesi as well as from rice producing provinces in Java," Kalla said at the launching of a training to increase rice production for sub-district heads, sub-district military chiefs and "Babinsa" (non-commissioned officers for village control) in the district of Maros in South Sulawesi.
The vice president said Indonesia had this year succeeded in achieving self-sufficiency in rice after a period of almost 50 years in which the country's rice production continously dropped.
"Thank God, South Sulawesi has been able to give us a rice surplus of two million tons," he said.
He said Indonesia had so far been able to achieve rice self-sufficency twice, namely in 1982 and this year. He hoped this year's achievement could be maintained and even improved so that the country's self-sufficiency in rice would continue.
"If we had failed to achieve rice self-sufficiency this year there would be imports but thank God our farmers remained in high spirits to increase their production," he said.
Kalla hoped the new year 2009 would bring new hopes for the country's future.
He said development of agricultural technology needed to be carried out so that rice production would increase from year to year, adding research in the sector had to be given an opportunity to progress.
