PRESIDENT: ECONOMIC GROWTH IN 2009 OVER 4.5 PERCENT

Jakarta, Dec 31 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the economic growth of Indonesia in 2009 would be over 4.5 percent, a figure which was quite realistic to achieve.

Speaking in a press conference after leading a meeting at the Finance Ministry here on Wednesday, the head of state said the rate of economic growth over 4.5 percent in 2009 was quite conservative amidst the world economic crisis which had prompted each country in the world to reduce its growth target.

"We expect next year there will be a delay in growth, a proper rate can be continuously maintained. The conservative rate is over 4.5 percent, however it is also realistic," the president said.

With the economic policy already prepared by the government, Yudhoyono was optimistic the targetted 4.5 percent economic growth would be achievable.

The president said the government has been ready to overcome various possibilities to happen as the result of world financial crisis.

Yudhoyono said there were seven priorities of Indonesian economy in 2009 that have been formulated by the government, namely curtailing unemployment rate, managing inflation, controlling movement of real sector, maintaining people's purchasing power, protecting economy of poor people, keeping sufficiency in food and energy and maintaining economic growth.

However, the government also prepared stimulant package which has yet to be included in the 2009 state budget, the value of which is still being calculated by the finance minister.

The stimulant economic package concerned, according to the president, was adjusted with the capability of the state budget to save the movement of real sector and to create job opportunity.
