GOVT TO RAISE CEILING PRICE OF DRIED UNHULLED RICE JANUARY 1

Jakarta, Dec 31 (ANTARA) - The government will raise the ceiling price of dried unhulled rice by 9.1 percent from Rp2,240 to Rp2,400 per kg as of January 1, 2009, an economic official said.

The decision to raise the government-set ceiling price of dried unhulled rice was formalized in the recently-issued Presidential Instruction No 8/2008, Bayu Krisnamurthi, deputy for agricuktural and marine affairs to the coordinating minster of economic affairs, said here Wednesday.

In addition, the government would also increase the ceiling price of dried unhulled rice at hulling centers by about 7.2 percent from Rp2,400 to Rp3,000 per kg.

In the meantime, the ceiling price of rice at the warehouse of the national logistics agency is also to be raised by 7 percent to Rp4,600 per kilogram.

Furthermore, Bayu said the main point of the presidential instruction No 8/2008 had to do with an effort to encourage and facilitate the use of certified prime seedlings of rice in addition to using organic and unorganic fertilizer in a balanced way for rice businesses of the farmers.

The presidential instruction also put a stress on effort to reduce a loss during a post harvesting time, the control of reduced technical irrigation area, rehabilitation of the area and regreening of water basin and rehabilitation of irrigation network in addition to pushing for an increased investment in rice businesses.

According to him, the presidential instruction also set a policy on the supply and channeling of subsidized rice for groups of low-income communities and that on the supply and channeling of rice to safeguard the stability the price of rice, overcoming emergency, disaster and food scarcity by giving priority to the use of the farmers' unhulled rice in the country.

The presidential instruction also set a policy on controlled export and import of rice in the framework of safeguarding the interest of farmers and consumers.

"Besides, a policy to safeguard the stability of domestic rice prices is stipulated by the government," he said.

Economic Coordinating Ministry built coordination in the planning, implementation and evaluation of its performance in implementing the policy on rice.

The presidential instruction also will be delivered to 12 ministers, three heads of agencies (such as the national land, investment coordinating agency and bureau center of statistics), the governors, district heads and mayors.
