Malaysia's UniMAP Bags Eight Gold Medals For Invention, Innovation In Poland
KANGAR (Perlis, Malaysia), Oct 16 (Bernama) -- Innovation studies on incinerators based on solid wastes as a new material for the construction industry won a gold medal for Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP or University of Malaysia, Perlis) at 'The 9th International Warsaw Invention Show' (IWIS 2015) in Warsaw University, Poland.
The event was held over three days, ending Wednesday.
The studies were the result of a joint research by the Centre of Excellence Geopolymer and Green Technology (CEGeoGTech) UniMAP and the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy Bulgaria (UTCM).
CEGeoGTech manager, Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Mustafa Al-Bakri Abdullah said the innovation study was triggered, following problems faced by a company dealing in incinerators in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.
According to UTCM researchers, associate professors Dr Andriana Surleva Iliana Batcheva and Gabriela Atanassova entrusted to carry out the study on solid waste incinerators, the material produced could contribute to the national economy.
"Since I've been doing pretty much the same study using fly ash (pulverised fuel ash) cement to produce new cement material for the construction sector, the UTCM invited me to participate in this research," Mohd Mustafa said in a statement here Thursday.
Located in Malaysia's northernmost state of Perlis, UniMAP won eight gold medals, one platinum medal, five silver and five Special Awards at the competition participated by 20 countries, among them Japan, Greece, South Korea, Maldova, Lebanon, Taiwan, Iraq, Thailand, Iran and Indonesia.
Besides the innovation by CEGeoGTech, UniMap also sent innovative inventions by the Centre of Excellence in Engineering and Advanced Technology (ACE), Centre of Excellence for Advanced Sensor Technology (CEASTech), School of Bioprocess Engineering, School Of Microelectronic Engineering, International Language Centre and School of Human Development and Techno Communication (IKOM).
Assoc Prof Dr Anuar Mat Safar won a platinum medal and a Special Award from the Chinese Innovation and Invention Society, while gold medals were won by UniMAP vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Dr Kamarudin Hussin, Dr Rashidi Che Beson, Dr Syed Zulkarnain Syed Idrus and Sharmini Abdullah.
Dr Mukhzeer Mohamad Shahimin won a gold medal while special awards were bestowed upon Noor Shazliana Aizee Abidin won the Special Maldova Award, Fathinul Shahir Ahmad Shahir (the Romanian Inventor Forum Price) and Mohd Fathullah Ghazali (IWIS Poland Special Award).
