OVER 3,400 WORKERS LAID OFF IN CENTRAL JAVA

Semarang, Central Java, Jan. 1 (ANTARA) - Some 31 companies in Central Java laid off a total of 3,441 workers during 2008, according to data collected by the Central Java manpower and transmigration office.
In addition to the lay-offs, 4,860 other workers were forced to take leave due to the impact of the current global economic crisis, Siswo Laksono, head of the provincial manpower and transmigration office, said here on Thursday.
The 31 companies which had laid off workers and forced workers to go on leave were located in 12 districts in Central Java, he said.
The districts were Semarang, Boyolali, Tegal, Cilacap, Sukoharjo, Klaten, Pekalongan, Jepara, Kendal and Demak.
Most of the companies were producing furniture and textiles, he said.
