TERNATE STUDENTS RALLY AGAINST ISRAEL

Ternate, Indonesia, Jan 1 (ANTARA)- Students grouped in the Indonesian Islamic Students Movement (GMII) here on new year's eve staged a rally against Israeli military action in the Gaza Strip.

The students at the same time also demanded that the Ternate city administration seriously implement the so-called Civil (Madani) concept in developing Ternate.

The Madani concept calls for administration pollcies to keep the city clean, orderly, safe and free from prostitution. According to the students, conditions in North Maluku's provincial capital were now a far cry from the Madani concept.

The demonstrators also called on the world's Muslim community to help the Palestinian people who were now suffering by the recent brutal Israeli air attacks.

Israeli military jets have pounded Islamist movement Hamas targets in densely-populated Gaza for two days with raids killing nearly 290 people -- actions which have prompted outrage and calls for restraint from around the world, AFP reported.

"Our rally is not intended to stir up trouble on new year's eve in Ternate. We just want to remind the Ternate city administration and other related parties to pay attention to our aspriations," the rally's coordinator, Muchtar Sibua, said.

New year's eve and Ternate's 758 anniversary were jointly celebrated at a mass gathering which was also attended by Ternate Mayor Syamsir Andili.

Meanhile, hundreds of college and high school students in Purwokerto , Central Java, hit the streets on Wednesday to protest against Israeli military aggression in the Gaza Strip in Palestinian territory.
