QUAKE HITS BENGKULU

Bengkulu, Jan 2 (ANTARA) - A 5.4 magnitude earthquake jolted Bengkulu province early Friday but there were no immediate reports of casualties or material damage.
The epicenter of the quake which struck at 01.37 a.m. was in the sea about 144 km southwest of Lais in North Bengkulu district at a depth of 36 km, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said.
It said the quake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
The tremblor forced many local residents who were still in bed to wake up and rush outdoors.
An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale rattled Bengkulu on September 12, 2007, killing 15 people and injuring 50 others.
