DEMOCRAT PARTY FREE TO END TIES WITH GOLKAR : SURYA PALOH
Jimbaran, Bali, Jan 2 (ANTARA)- The chairman of the Golkar Party's Advisory Council, Surya Paloh, said the Democrat Party was free to leave or terminate its ties with Golkar in 2009 if it felt o maintaining its coalition with Golkar was no longer appropriate.
"I would say, the Democrat Party is free to leave Golkar," Paloh told the press in Sanur, Bali on Friday, after attending a major Golkar Party meeting which was also attended by Golkar chairman Jusuf Kalla.
The Golkar Party would not loss should the Democrat Party leave Golkar whose electoral identification number for the 2009 legislative elections is 23.
Paloh further said Golkar can continue to serve the country and people without coalescing with the Democrat Party, adding that Golkar could ally itself with other parties.
He noted so far the relationship between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as a Democrat Party cadre and Vice President Jusuf Kalla as a Golkar Party cadre was of course a coalition.
However, if the Democrat Party felt it was no longer necessary to build a coalition with Golkar, the latter would be able to cooperate with any other party, Paloh said.
"Golkar will not suffer any great loss if the Democrat Party leaves it," he reiterated.
In the meantime, asked about Golkar Party's preparations for the legislative elections in April 2009, Paloh said all Golkar cadres and sympathizers had to work hard.
