EARTHQUAKES INJURE RESIDENTS AND DAMAGE BUILDINGS IN MANOKWARI
Jayapura, Papua, Jan. 4 (ANTARA) - A series of earthquakes, which hit Manokwari, West Papua Province, on Sunday morning, injured at least four residents and damaged a number of buildings, including two hotels and the West Papua governor's office.
A joint rescue team consisting of police and military personnel as well as local residents, searched for two persons believed to be buried under the debris of Mutiara Hotel, which collapsed due to the powerful earthquakes, Senior Commissioner Agus Riyanto, a spokesman of the Papua Police, said here on Sunday.
"Now, local people and security personnel are trying to help those being buried under the hotel's debris," he said.
There was no report of casualty in the temblor, but four residents were injured and rushed to the Manokwari public hospital, he said.
Besides Mutiara Hotel, Swissbell hotel was also seriously damaged, he said.
According to information on the BMG's website, Papua Island, the eastern most Indonesian island, was jolted by at least 25 temblors with magnitudes ranging from 5.0 to 7.9 on the Richter scale, on Sunday morning.
The earthquakes affected Manokwari and Sorong (West Papua Province), and Biak (Papua Province).
Among the powerful earthquakes hitting Manokwari were a 7.9 magnitude temblor which rocked at 2.33 am Western Indonesian Time (WIB), and a 7.6-magnitude earthquake occurring at 5.33 am (WIB).
The 7.9-magnitude earthquake occurring in the wee hours of Sunday was felt at V-VI MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in Sorong and Manokwari, and IV-V MMI in Ransiki, also West Papua.
Its epicenter was located at 0.58 degrees southern latitude and 132.85 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 48 km beneath seabed, and around 138 km west of Manokwasi.
The epicenter of the 7.6-magnitude earthquake was located at 0.88 degrees southern latitude and 133.38 degrees eastern longitude, 76 km southwest of Manokwari, at a depth of 10 km below sea level.
The temblor was felt at the II -III MMI in Sorong, and IV-V MMI in Manokwari.
Hundreds of West Papua's residents living along the coastal areas, evacuated themselves to higher ground in fear of a tsunami, which did not occurred.
