THOUSANDS DEMONSTRATE OUTSIDE US CONSULATE GENERAL IN MEDAN
Medan, Jan 4 (ANTARA) - More than three thousand Moslem demonstrators rallied in front of the US consulate general in Medan, North Sumatra, on Saturday condemning the Israeli military aggression in Palestine.
The demonstrators who mostly consisted of members of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) gathered in the compound of the Grand Mosque on Jalan Diponegoro before marching to the US consulate at the Uniland Building on Jalan MT Haryono.
On their way to the consulate, they shouted slogans condemning the Israeli aggression which since December 27 had killed more than 400 Palestinians and injured thousand others in the Gaza Strip.
The demonstrators targeted the US consulate general because that country along with its allies had supported the killing of Moslems in Palestine.
"Although it was clear that Israel has conducted a masacre the US and its allies continue to defend every move made by the Jewish state. The US has trampled down the principles of democracy and human rights which it has professed to champion," acting chairman of the PKS North Sumatra chapter, Mustafa Ismail, said in his oration.
He said the Palestinians who had been confined by Israeli walls could not do much. Palestinian moslems were facing hunger, power outages and lack of fuel oils and medical supplies.
Therefore, the demonstrators demanded that the International Court of Justice try Israel and the US, and urged the Indonesian government to be pro-active in preventing the killing of Palestinians by Israel and facilitating the shipment of the Indonesian people's aid for the Palestinians.
Nobody from the consulate came out to meet the demonstrators as the office was closed for the Christmas and New Year holidays until the end of this week.
The demonstration that lasted for two hours was guarded by the police including the chief of the North Sumatra police command, Inspector General Nanan Soekarno.
