RI`S REDD PROGRAM RECEIVES DONATION FROM SEVEN COUNTRIES, OFFICIAL

Jakarta, Jan 4 (ANTARA) - The director general of Social Land and Forest Rehabilitation of the Forestry Ministry, Sunaryo, said
seven countries had already given a donation to the Reducing Emissions in Development Countries (REDD) program in Indonesia.

"There are now seven countries which have given their support to the REDD program," Sunaryo said here on Sunday, adding that the support took the form of soft loan and aid.

The seven donor countries included Australia, Norway, Germany, and the UK. The four countries had given free financial aid for the program. Meanwhile, the other two countries, Japan and France, gave a soft loan to the REDD program.

"South Korea is the last country which has given a donation in the form of free aid for the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) program," he said.

Moreover, Sunaryo explained that the fund was used to support forest maintenance which would involve the people's participation. The fund, he said, would also be used to support the people's activity related to forest maintenance and carbon reduction commitment.

"The realization program is still in the form of a pilot project in several areas such as Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, and Palembang. The project is not too wide, we only have 100,000 hectares," Sunaryo said.

Furthermore, the director also explained that the soft loan for the REDD program was used to cover the State Budget's deficit. As the consequences of this policy, Sunaryo said, Indonesia must have a commitment to take care of its forests.
