PRESIDENT OPENS FIRST-DAY STOCK TRADING IN 2009
Jakarta, Jan 5 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here Monday came to the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) building and officially opened share trading at 9.30 am local time.
The president was accompanied by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati who is also coordinating minister of economic affairs, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Rajasa and BEI Managing Director Erry Firmansyah.
"This year we will still be facing challenges but we must remain optimistic that we will overcome them. Falls in share prices have also happened in other countries," he said.
The Jakarta composite index in 2008 was closed at 1,355.41 on December 31 last year.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister said the president's presence at the opening of share trading in the new year was meant to strengthen market players' trust and confidence in coping with the challenges that might occur in the stock market in the days ahead.
