UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN 2008 DOWN : BPS

Jakarta, Jan 5 (ANTARA) - The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) said the unemployment rate in Indonesia in August 2008 was recorded at 8.39 percent or about 9.39 million people of the country's total work force.
The unemployment rate in 2008 showed a decline from that in August 2007 which stood at 9.11 percent, or 10.01 million of the total work force.
"An increase in job opportunities in the services sector such as carpenter, domestic helpers, transportation and agriculture has helped cut the unemployment rate in 2008," BPS deputy chief for social statistics affairs, Arizal Ahnaf, said here on Monday.
He said the work force in August 2008 increased by 2.01 million to 111.95 million from 109.94 million in 2007.
At the same time the number of employed people in August 2008 increased by 2.62 million to 102.55 million from 99.93 million in the previous year.
"Generally the employment condition in the second semester of 2008 was normal. No indication of global economic crisis impact has been observed," he said.
He said that employment chances in all sectors increased in 2008 if compared with those in 2007. The biggest increase happened with the social service sector which rose by 1.08million to 13.10 million.
It was followed by the trade sector, which increased by 677,000 people to 21.22 million workers and transportation sector which was up by 220,000 to 6.18 million.
Of the 102.55 million workers in August 2008, some 28.18 million (27.5 percent) were regular laborers/workers, 21.77 million (21.2 percent) non-regular laborers/workers and 20.92 million (20.4 percent) were entrepreneurs.
Some 3.02 million others (2.9 percent) were entrepreneurs with the assistance of regular laborers/workers.
He said that those unemployed in 2008 were dominated by work forces with senior high school education and higher one but if compared with those in 2007 the number of workers of this educational category tended to decline. ***2***
