NGOs: INVOLVE VARIOUS ELEMENTS TO SAVE PAPER INDUSTRIES

Jakarta, Jan 6 (ANTARA) - Some five non-government organizations (NGOs) have urged the government to save pulp and paper industries from bankruptcy by involving various public elements such as labors and farmers unions, environmental organizations, and customary communities.

According to a joint statement made by five NGOs, the expected involvement of various public elements would mean the government wanted to prioritize public interest rather than that of capital owners.

The joint statement was signed and issued by the Indonesian Labors Union Alliance Congress (KASBI), the Indonesian Forum for Environment (Walhi), the Workers Association (PRP), the Indonesian Pulp and Paper Workers Union Federation (FSP2KI), and the Community Alliance for Pulp and Paper Advocacy (CAPPA).

It was said in the joint statement that the impact of global economic crisis on various companies in Indonesia had made thousands of workers in the country the victims of lay-off.

Following the crisis, PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (PT RAPP) had to stop employing thousands of its workers because there was not enough work from them to do.

The five non-government organizations in their joint statement also rejected the decree to stop the investigation into the case of illegal logging in Riau because according to them it had a tendency to destroy the environment in the country.
