YOGYAKARTA POLICE PRIORITIZE PREVENTION, HANDLING OF THUGGERY
Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Jan 6 (ANTARA) - Yogyakarta Police will continue to prioritize the prevention and handling of thuggery and other conventional crimes in 2009, including possible security disturbances in this year's general election campaigns.
"The prevention and handling of hooliganism and other conventional crimes, including possible security disturbances during the general election campaigns, remain in the Yogyakarta Police's list of priorities this year," Yogyakarta Police spokesman Commissioner Sujanto said here on Tuesday.
According to him, operations against thugs started late last year and therefore the prevention and handling of thuggery this year will remain on the local police's list of priorities.
"Hooliganism and other crimes in Yogyakarta have upset the local people and they have the potential to create security disturbances," Sujanto said, adding that the people should also cooperate with the police to overcome the menace.
Therefore, he called on the people to report to the police if they found certain activities that could lead to security disturbances.
He said campaigning activity in the run up to the legislative and presidential elections were also prone to security disturbances.
