RI ASKS NAM TO SPONSOR UNGA EMERGENCY SESSION ON PALESTINE
Jakarta, Jan 6 (ANTARA) - Indonesia has asked the chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to support its action in calling for a United Nations General Assembly emergency session to discuss the crisis in Palestine, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda said.
"Considering the failure of the UN Security Council to ensure security and create peace in the world, our representative in New York has sent a letter asking NAM to sponsor efforts for the holding of an emergency session of the UN General Assembly," Wirajuda said here on Tuesday.
However, he said, the Arab countries had suggested a postponement of the initiative on the ground that the UN Security Council was planning to hold a formal meeting to discuss and adopt a resolution on the issue on Wednesday and Thursday.
"We are a bit skeptical about (the UNSC's plan), so we are continuing our action to urge the holding of a UNGA emergency session based on the United Nations Charter's article 51 on Uniting for Peace Resolution," he said.
He said "NAM has about 117 members and the UN 192 members, so I am optimistic Indonesia can get the support of the majority of UN member countries. The NAM supports the idea to hold the emergency session because it backs the freedom of Palestine," Wirayuda added.
There was a chance that the Security Council meeting would result in a resolution "but we will continue our action," the minister said.
Besides the diplomatic action, Indonesia was also actively providng Palestine with humanitarian assistance consisting of medicines and US$1 million in cash, he said.
"We really appreciate the response from the Indonesian people considering the latest situation in the Gaza Strip. However, we also need to agree that the assistance we will give Palestine must be effective. It is better to send them medicines or medical personnel," he said.
At present, he said, Indonesia was waiting for clearance from the Egyptian government to send medical personnel to Palestine.
"President Yudhoyono has instructed the Health Minister to send medical volunteers to Sinai, Egypt, where the Egyptian government has built a field hospital to treat injured Palestinians," Wirayuda said.
The goverment could coordinate the sending of many kinds of aid from the Indonesian people to Palestine but sending jihad (martyr) troops was not an option, the minister said.
