AGUNG LAKSONO TO LEAVE FOR GAZA STRIP
Jakarta, Jan. 7 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono said he was to leave for the Gaza Strip on Wednesday in his capacity as president of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) to deliver relief aid to Palestinians.
"Today (Wednesday, Jan. 7), I will leave for Gaza but I will make a stopover in Damascus (Syria) first to meet the others (of APA)," Laksono said here on Wednesday.
He said he planned to go to the war-torn Gaza Strip with a former APA president from Iran and the next APA president from Syria.
The decision to go to the Gaza Strip was made at an APA meeting held in Jakarta recently, he said.
The upcoming meeting in Damascus with the Iranian and Syrian House Speakers would discuss how far they could go in the Gaza Strip, whether they would just stay at the border between Gaza and Egypt or go to another area, he said.
They would deliver funds amounting to US$250,000 collected from APA members for Gaza residents. The funds could be used to buy food and medicines.
APA would also convey its resolutions to the conflicting parties and the United Sates. The resolutions call for a ceasefire and the end of Israeli colonialism in Palestine.
Laksono was scheduled to stay in the Gaza Strip until Saturday (Jan 10).
The Israeli military aggression in the Gaza Strip has killed more than 600 Palestinians, including women and children, and injured over 2,500 others since December 27, 2008.
Anti-Israeli rallies have taken place in Jakarta and other cities in Indonesia since the Israeli military aggression in the Gaza Strip.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has condemned the Israeli aggression and expressed his administration's commitment to providing humanitarian aid amounting to one billion US dollars, and medicines, for the Palestinians.
