MUI CALLS FOR BOYCOTT OF US PRODUCTS

Jakarta, Jan 7 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has called for a boycott of United States products for the double standard the superpower has adopted with regard to the Israeli military strikes on Palestine.

"I think a boycott of US products could serve as a lesson to the superpower for the double standard it is applying," MUI chairman KH Ma'ruf Amin told a press conference here on Wednesday.
He said Israel was very obedient to the United States but the United States up to now still kept silent while hundreds of innocent Palestinians continued to become victims of Israel's wanton military attacks.
Ma'fur said a boycott of United States products could have an impact on the people but it had to be done for the sake of a more important objective, namely to give a stern reprimand to the United States.
"The United States is like an 'imam' (leader). So whatever it says will be followed by Israel. But up to now, the United States continues to keep silent so that Israel also continues its onslaught," he said.
In the meantime, the Muslim Corps (KAUM) organization held a rally in front of the West Java governor's office here on Wednesday, calling for a boycott of United States products.
About 200 activists grouped in KAUM also exhorted the people to boycott the United States' and other Israeli allies' products as a form of protest to the Israeli military aggression against Palestine.
The demonstrators also called for Indonesia's withdrawal from the United Nations as an expression of solidarity with Palestine.
They said Indonesia should quit the UN because the world body was no longer of any use in maintaining world peace.
"The United Nations is unable to do anything to prevent whatever Israel and the United States want to do. It can only send a peacekeeping force after the two countries have created chaos," KAUM coordinator Suryana Nurfatwa said.
