ABU BAKAR BAASYIR CALLS FOR HOLY WAR TO HELP PALESTINE
Jember, Indonesia, Jan 7 (ANTARA) - Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Baasyir, the leader of Ngruki Islamic boarding school in Solo, Central Java, has called on Inndonesian Muslims to wage holy war (Jihad) in Palestine against Israeli attacks.
"It is mandatory for Muslims to wage jihad in Palestine," Baasyir said after delivering a lecture at Nur Rohman mosque in Sumbersari subdistrict, Jember, on Wednesday.
He said Indonesian Muslims should help lighten the burden of the Palestinian people by giving them material or logistical assistance.
"If Muslims cannot give material assistance to the Palestinian people, they can pray for them," Baasyir said, adding that the Indonesian government had yet to give significant assistance to the Palestinian people, although President Yudhoyono had criticized the Israeli aggression against Palestine.
"The Indonesia government should have mobilized jihad to Palestine," Baasyir said.
He added that the United States and Britain supported Israel and therefore Indonesia had to take resolute action against those two countries.
"If need be, Indonesia has to sever its diplomatic relations with the United States and Britain," Baasyir said.
Born in 1938 in East Java, Abu Bakar Baasyir has spent decades teaching Islam, and become influential among radical Muslims in South East Asia.
His consistent theme has been that forming Islamic communities was necessary pre-condition for setting up an Islamic state.
In addition to running the Ngruki Islamic school in Solo, he also sat in the executive board of the Mujahideen Council, which was formed in Yogyakarta in 2000 as an umbrella group for people wanting to turn Indonesia into an Islamic state.
Meanwhile, hundreds of activists from several Islamic organizations staged an anti-Israel rally in front of Grahadi building in Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday.
The protesters strongly condemned the relentless Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip that had left hundreds of Palestinian civilians and children dead.
Seen among the protesters were leaders of the local branches of major Islamic organizations such as KH Abdusshomad Buchori of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), KH Soleh Hayat of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), KH Nidhom of Muhammadiyah, Farida of Fatayat NU, Ibnu of Hizbut Tahirir Indonesia, and a number of activists from the Indonesian Islamic Propagation Institute (LDII), Ansor Youth Movement, and Al Irsyad who all condemned Israel in their orations.
