HANURA EXPECTS TO COME OUT AS FIFTH BIGGEST PARTY
Cirebon, Indonesia, Jan 7 (ANTARA) - The chairman of Hanura (People's Conscience) Party, Wiranto, said here on Wednesday that the party expected to come out as the fifth biggest party in the legislative elections next April and was ready to be dissolved if it failed to pass the electoral threshold.
"We are not talking about target but seeing the development of the party in the regions I am optimistic Hanura will collect the fifth biggest votes," he said to newsmen after the commemoration of the second anniversary of the party at a district-level in Cirebon, West Java.
Earlier before 500 cadres the former military strongman called on all party cadres to work hard to win as many votes as possible as without a big victory no leader from Hanura could emerge.
"If the party only turns out to be a small party in the elections it would be better to dissolve it," he said.
Wiranto however corrected the statement at the press conference afterwards saying that Hanura had become a big party with executive branches in 33 provinces and 470 districts and cities so that it could not just be dissolved.
He said his statement on party dissolution was connected with electoral threshold regulations which state that a party that could only collect less than three percent votes was not allowed to participate in the next general elections. "Better to dissolve it rather than being dissolved later," he said.
In his political oration, the former commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), said the country which was rich in natural resources had now been under depression as shown by the high rate of poverty because no reference was available to be used to make use of the richness for the welfare of the people.
"This is all because of a degradation in the nation's morality and therefore the cure for it is reviving the people's conscience particularly the leaders. It is impossible for sick leaders to lead the country to the better," he said.
After making the statement Wiranto asked all legislative candidates at the gathering to come on stage where he then asked them if they were ready to carry out the people's mandate with conscience and they all pledged they were.
"If you have become leaders and do not have conscience I will fire you at once," he said.
Wiranto himself said he would dedicate the rest of his life to the interests of the nation and the state.***
