NUMBER OF AIR PASSENGERS DOWN 2.6 PERCENT
Jakarta, Jan 7 (ANTARA) - The transportation ministry said the number of air passengers at 23 airports during 2008 Christmas and 2009 New Year celebrations recorded a decline in the number of domestic passengers travelling by planes declined compared to those during the previous same occasions.
"During 2008 Christmas and 2009 New Year the number of air passengers reached 1.402 million, a 2.67 percent decline compared to those in the previous occasions," Tri S Sunoko, Director of Air Transportation, said here on Wednesday.
However, he said that compared to the number of air passengers during low season from December 22, 2008 to January 4, 2009, their number increased 10.8 percent.
Earlier, eight airline companies namely Garuda Indonesia, Sriwijaya Air, Lion Air, Mandala, Wing, Riau Airlines, Merpati Airlines and Batavia Air, had asked for more flights with 61,492 seats.
Lion Air had asked for 58 flight frequencies, Mandala Air 35 frequencies and Garuda 13 frequencies.
He said the Jakarta-Denpasar route ranked first in the number of additional flights during Chrismas and New Year, followed by the Jakarta-Yogyakarta route in second position.
Meanwhile, Tri also said that the number of air passengers also increased by 7.5 percent to 272,272 from 260,453 flying from four airports, namely Soekarno-Hatta in Jakarta, Polonia in Medan, Juanda in Surabaya and Ngurah Rai in Bali.
Compared to those during low season, Tri said the number of passengers going abroad during Christmas and New Year increased by 2.8 percent.
It has been predicted that the number of international air passengers during the two special holidays increased by 5.82 percent compared to those during low season.
