RI HOUSE SPEAKER TO SEND OFF HUMANITARIAN TEAM TO PALESTINE

Cairo, Jan 8 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono and a few other DPR members are expected to arrive in Egypt on Friday to send off an Indonesian team that will deliver humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people, an Indonesian diplomat here said.
Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt AM Fachir said here Thursday the Indonesian parliamentary delegation would include Abdillah Toha, chairman of the DPR's Inter-parliamentary Cooperation Board and Makarim Wibisono, former Indonesian ambassador to the UN in Geneva who is now a senior adviser to the House Speaker.
The ambassador made the statement on the sidelines of preparations for the sending off of the advance team of an Indonesian humanitarian mission for Palestine to Rafah on the Egyptian-Palestinian border.
Besides extending humanitarian assistance from the Indonesian parliament, Agung Laksono would also meet with Egyptian Parliamentary Speaker Fathi Sourur and visit Palestinian victims of Israeli military strikes in Cairo hospitals.
In the meantime, Indonesia's second phase assistance worth Rp2.1 billion was ready for dispatch to Rafah, a city on the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip in Palestine.
The assistance included medicines and other healthcare equipment such as ambulance cars.
Dr Rustam S Pakaya, head of the crisis management center of the Indonesian Health Ministry, said the second-phase assistance worth Rp2.1 billion consisted of Rp700 million from the Indonesian government, Rp500 million from the Indonesian Red-Cross and Rp900 million from Medical Emergency Rescue Indonesia (MER-C).
He said the first-phase assistance had been extended when the Indonesian team arrived in Jordan. The assistance was received by Jordanian Health Minister Fathi Abu Mougli last week.
The first-phase assistance consisted of medicines worth Rp300 million and Rp1 billion in cash.
Pakaya said the second-phase assistance was expected to be sent in a truck convoy from Cairo to Rafah through El-Arish on the border on Friday morning.
"God willing, the assistance will be sent directly to Rafah on the border on Friday," he said.
