RI WELCOMES UNSC RESOLUTION ON ISRAELI ATTACKS

Jakarta, Jan 9 (ANTARA) - Indonesia welcomes the United Nations Security Council's Resolution 1860/2009 on Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip which was approved on Thursday, Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda said here Friday.

He said the Indonesian government welcomed the resolution which was approved by the UN Security Council at a formal meeting after the informal meeting it held previously had ended without a resolution.

"Where its substance is concerned, we welcome the resolution which emphasized the need for a ceasefire and the provision of humanitarian aid. But we had hoped there would be a stronger and more compelling resolution," Wirayuda said.

He said some of the problems which the resolution had tried to address could not be decided by the UNSC alone because they depended on the initiative of some countries or regions.

As an example, he referred to the Egyptian-French initiative to bring Israel and Palestine to the negotiation table.

The minister also said Indonesia's efforts to have the UN Security Council hold a special emergency meeting were appreciated by the Arab countries as they had helped to persuade the Council to convene the official meeting at which the resolution was passed.
