World Food Programme hails Saudi Campaign US$4 million donation

London, January 09, SPA -- World Food Programme (WFP) welcomed a US$4
million donation from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Campaign
for the Relief of the Palestinian People in Gaza.

“This is a timely and extremely welcome donation that will help the
people of Gaza in their hour of need,” said Christine van
Nieuwenhuyse, WFP Representative in the occupied Palestinian
territory in a statement uploaded on WFP website, adding that the
money would be used to purchase wheat flour, vegetable oil, sugar and
salt.

The statement said the donation would be used immediately to provide
urgently needed food assistance to the people in the occupied Gaza
Strip.

The statement pointed out that WFP is providing food assistance to
more than 265,000 people in Gaza in 2009, and that the cost of the
humanitarian operation was expected to rise due to additional needs
caused by the current situation in the Strip.

The statement informed that the people in Gaza are facing growing
difficulties locating the food they need to feed their families, as
few commodities are available on local markets, and humanitarian
organizations are struggling to operate under the current insecure
conditions.

It is noteworthy that WFP is a major world humanitarian organization
and a leader among UN organizations in fighting hunger.
