KAPET OFFERS SEAWEED BUSINESS TO INVESTORS
Manado, N Sulawesi, Jan 9 (ANTARA) - The Manado-Bitung Integrated Economic Development Zone (KAPET) had conducted a feasibility study of the seaweed business in North Sulawesi province and is ready to offer the outcome to potential investors, an official said.
"The seaweed potential in North Sulawesi province reached 5,800 hectares, but only 600 hectares are fit for business. Therefore, there is still a big potential left," planning director of the Manado-Bitung Kapet, Dr Charles Keppel, said here Friday.
According to the result of the feasibility study, he said, the 5.800 hectares might produce 11.600 tons of seaweed. And on the basis of the recent price of Rp 8,000 per kilogram, Charles said, the harvested seaweed will have a value of Rp 928 billion.
"One hectare of seaweed is equal to two tons of harvested seaweed. Therefore, the farmers may receive Rp 64 billion in gross revenue a year from four harvests," he added.
Meanwhile, Charles added, the production time of seaweed in a single harvest season reached only 1,5 months. Therefore, this type of plantation was classified as Quick Yielding.
"This potential has not been used by our farmers because many of them look at the seaweed business as of secondary importance," he said.
Therefore, investors might motivate the farmers to take up the seaweed business more seriously. Charles said investors were more inclined to develop a business in an integrated way which would bring more profit.
Moreover, Charles added, the demand in the international market was very high with the Philippines accounting for 80 percent of the world's total seaweed sales. Meanwhile, Indonesia's seaweed sales, he said, reached only 10 percent.
Furthermore, chairman of foreign trade of the North Sumatra industry and trade agency Hanny Wajong, said that the highest demand for seaweed came from China and some other East Asia countries. Meanwhile, European countries such as France, Germany, and the UK, were also seaweed importers.
