NIHR receives US delegation

Manama, Mar. 10 (BNA): The National Institution of Human Rights (NIHR) received a delegation from the US Congress currently visiting the Kingdom of Bahrain to familiarize with the country's accomplishments in various fields. The National Institution's Assistant Secretary-general and Acting Secretary-general, Yasser Shaheen, received the delegation and briefed them about the role undertaken by NIHR according to its jurisdictions in protecting and boosting human rights. The meeting touched on Bahrain's first and second Universal Periodic Review (UPR) reports in 2013 and 2014. He briefed the delegation about the Kingdom's impeccable record on human rights in line with His Majesty the King's reforms which consolidated the democratic process and human rights in the country that paved the way to create the independent Ombudsman Office and form local human rights watchdogs, the creation and formation of the National Institution of Human Rights simultaneously with enactment of national legislations and the ratification of international conventions aimed to safeguard and protect human rights. The delegation appreciated the role of the National Institution of Human Rights in boosting and protecting human rights, and commended the Kingdom of Bahrain's experience in the field of human rights as one of the most promising experiences worthy of being conveyed to other communities.
