SULTAN HAS LITTLE REGARD FOR POPULARITY POLL RESULTS
Yogyakarta, Jan 10 (ANTARA) - Yogyakarta Governor Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, a potential presidential hopeful, said he had little regard for the popularity ratings given by public opinion surveyors or pollsters to the country's presidential aspirants.
"The results of such surveys are only valid for today. They may well change within the next few days," he said here Saturday in a comment on a poll conducted by the Institute for Social and Economic Research, Education and Information (LP3ES) which offered the conclusion that a Megawati Soekarnoputri-Sultan Hamengku Buwono X ticket would be the strongest rival to a Susilo Bambang Yudoyono-Jusuf Kalla ticket.
"Therefore, I do not rely on poll and survey results. Instead I prefer making realistic efforts by establishing networks within the society. I will try to become more mobile and convince people," he said.
About reports saying he would meet Megawati before her Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) held a national conference in Solo at the end of January, the sultan said he did not have any information about it as he was not aware of any such plan.
"I have not received any notice for such a meeting from Megawati nor from any of the PDIP executive board members. We will see how things in this matter develop," he said.
According to the reports, the meeting between Megawati and the sultan in mid-January would be a momentum for them to declare their readiness to team up to contest the presidennntial election later this year.
