PRESIDENT APPRECIATES RI PEOPLE'S SOLIDARITY WITH PALESTINE
Jakarta, Jan 10 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said here on Saturday he appreciated all efforts made by various parties in the country to show their solidarity with and sympathy for the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip who were suffering under Israel's military attacks.
"I passed by Hotel Indonesia yesterday and read a poster calling on people wishing to donate blood for victims of violence in Palestine to do so through the Indonesian Red Cross. I read it at a glance but I support it because what the Palestinians need is concrete humanitarian aid," he said.
The Head of State said what was badly needed by the Palestinian people was humanitarian aid, be it medicines, food or drinking water.
"What is needed by those who are suffering are medicines, food and clean water. What we are doing is giving real contributions to our brothers who are going through difficult times," he said.
On Saturday evening President Yudhoyono held a talk with French President Nicolas Sarkozy by phone to discuss the latest developments in the Gaza crisis.
The talk was held following President Sarkozy's visit to the Middle East region early this week in his effort to help find a solution to the conflict that began following Israeli attacks on Gaza.
President Yudhoyono and President Sarkozy shared the same view that joint efforts to overcome the humanitarian crisis had to be continuoulsy made so that the death toll particularly among children and women would not increase.
