GAMELAN MUSIC IS POTENTIAL CREATIVE INDUSTRY: EXPERT

Solo, C Java, Jan 10 (ANTARA) - Gamelan music from different parts on Indonesia has the potential of becoming a creative industry as practitioners of western music are increasingly turning to eastern music forms, including those found in Indonesia, an expert said.

Central Java, Sunda (West Java), Bali, Bugis (South Sulawesi) or other regions had the potential of heading to creative industry as the western music was turning to eastern countries including Indonesia in its development.

Rahayu Supanggah , a professor of karawitan (a gamelan-based musical art form) at the Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI) in Surakarta, made the remark at a seminar on the development of Gong Kebyar (a kind of gamelan), here Saturday.

She said western music had reached its ultimate limits of development, and many of its practitioners were turning to eastern culture, including Indonesian, for new inspiration. "Therefore, gamelan music, whether it is from Central Java,West Java, Bali or Bugis (South Sulawesi), has a real potential to become a creative industry."
Consequently, she said, globalization should not always be viewed as a threat to traditional cultures. In fact, globalization was opening an opportunity to develop gamelan music as it was drawing inceasing attention in the west.

In the present modern age, according to Supanggah, tradition had become significant as a way to find one's own identity. It was thus not surprising that many western musicians in their quest for identity were turning to eastern culture which had remained pure.

She said, in the west, gamelan had become not only a source of inspiration to develop music but also an artistic skill taught in British prisons.

"Gamelan music can help to soften the brutal side of a person, stimulate creativity, the ability to coopere with others," she said.

To illustrate how widespread international appreciation for gamelan music was, she mentioned the numbers of gamelan instrument sets existing abroad. There were over 500 sets in the United States, about 100 sets each in England and Japan, and also in Australia, Germany and France. In Singapore, almost every primary school had a gamelan set.
