STUDENTS CONTINUE RAISING FUNDS FOR PALESTINE

Pangkalpinang, Bangka-Belitung, Jan 10 (ANTARA)- University students in several parts of the country including in Pangkalpinang, Bangka-Belitung (Babel) province and Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province, continue to raise funds for Palestine.

The students initiated the effort after the vicious Israeli bombardnments on the Gaza Strip since December 27, 2008 killed more than 800 people, mostly civilians.

"We cannot keep quiet regarding the Palestinian dead victims which nearly reach a total of 1,000 people after being bombarded (by Israeli troops), and the need for medicines for thousands of others who were injured," Aditya Purnama of the Bangka Belitung University (UBB) students executive board said here on Saturday.

If the United Nations fails to stop Israeli military attacks on the Gaza Strip, the students would keep raising funds to help the Palestinian people, he said without elaborating on the total of funds collected so far.

In the meantime, NTB Governor KH. M. Zainul Majdi had earlier sponsored a fund raising campaign in which some Rp40 million was collected.

In addition, on Friday (Jan 9) Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said that Indonesian assistance for Palestine was best given in the form of cash rather than in other kind as recommended by Egypt which shares a border with Palestine.

The minister told journalists, Egypt had also suggested that all aid for Palestine be sent to its desination via Egypt.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had earlier stated that Indonesia would help Palestine with US$ 1 million in cash and medicines.
