MPR CHAIRMAN CALLS ON A SHUT DOWN OF THE U.N.

Jakarta Jan 12 (ANTARA) - Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Hidayat Nur Wahid, said if the United Nations failed to stop Israeli attacks on Palestine, the UN should be closed down and replaced with a new more effective world body to maintain world peace.

"The UN was founded as a correction of the League of Nations. If the UN hs become ineffective, replace it. The majority of the countries in the world is against Israeli action and must agree on a shut down of the UN," the former president of PKS (Prosperous Justice Party) said here Sunday.
Earlier at the Natonal Monument square here Sunday morning, Hidayat led thousands in a rally against Israel and urged the government to actively contact other peaceful nations' leaders to put pressure on the Zionist country to stop its invasion of Palestine.
He also called on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono not only to phone French President Nicolas Sarkozy urging peace in Palestine, but also to contact Middle Eastern leaders including Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, King of Jordan and the Turkish leader.
"The President could ask Egypt not to obey Israel and boldly open Raffah City in the border of the Gaza Strip, as a lane for aid to the Gaza Strip and take victims out of the city," he said.
President Yudhoyono was suggested to contact the Turkish president which is a fellow non-Arabic member of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).
"The President could coordinate with Turkey to ask the UN to make concerted efforts to stop the Israeli attacks. If the UN Security Council resolution fails, Indonesia could ask the UN General Assembly to hold an emergency meeting," he said.
As there is no veto mechanism in the UN General assembly, it can be seen in countries which have committed terrorism and crime against humanity, he said.
Previously, early in January 2009, Hidayat joined a trip of the International Ulemas delegation called "Al Ittihad Al Alami li Ulamaa'il Muslimin" led by Syaikh Yusuf Qaradhawi to several Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, Syria and Egypt.
The Indonesian delegation also attended a meeting with Arab leaders to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Palestine following the Israeli attacks on the Gaza stripe.
President Yudhoyono contacted President Sarkozy on Saturday, (Jan 10), and both were very disappointed because the UN Security Council resolution 1860 on the Gaza crisis was not obeyed resulting in the violence and killing civilians including children and women in Gaza.
In a press statement at the State Palace in Jakarta, President Yudhoyono said that Indonesia and France would continue every effort to end the crisis in the Gaza Strip.
