RI, SYRIA TO INCREASE COOPERATION IN VARIOUS FIELDS

Jakarta, Jan 12 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Syria have agreed to step up their cooperative relations in the fields of politics, trade, investment, agriculture, energy, and manpower.

"The potentials for closer economic cooperation between Indonesia and Syria are quite big. Therefore, the joint commission of the two countries should focus its attention on cooperation in various fields," President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said at a joint press conference with visiting Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Naji Otri at the State Palace here on Monday.

President Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Otri earlier held a one-hour bilateral meeting to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, and efforts to strengthen cooperative relations between Indonesia and Syria.

Present at the bilateral meeting were also Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Rajasa, Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal, Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni, Minister for National Development Planning Board Paskah Suzetta, and Public Housing Minister Yusuf Asy'ari.

According to Yudhoyono, Otri's visit to Indonesia was considered to have erected a new pillar for future relations between the two countries as close friends.

"Syria was one of the first countries to recognize Indonesia's independence, and in the future, our relations should be stepped up further for the wellbeing of the two countries," Yudhoyono said.

The president expressed hope that the joint commission the two countries had formed would formulate new ways to further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Concerning Indonesian workers in Syria, the two governments agreed to enter into tangible cooperation to overcome various problems being faced by the workers.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Otri on the occasion also expressed hope that the relations between the two countries, especially in the economic field, would be further cemented.

"Our political relation are already strong and we hope it will be followed by the strengthening of economic relations," Otri said.

Trade between Indonesia and Syria from 2003 to 2008 showed a strong upward trend.

The value of bilateral trade in 2003 was recorded at US$47.08 million, and it continued to rise to US$55.08 million in 2004, US$60.48 million in 2005, US$62.40 million in 2006, US$79.97 million in 2007, and to US$76.14 million up to September 2008.
