SHIPWRECKED BOAT IN MAKASSAR STRAIT CARRIED 267 PEOPLE
Parepare, Jan 12 (ANTARA) - The KM Teratai Prima that sank in waters off the West Sulawesi coast on Sunday (Jan 11) was carrying a total of 267 people, a Parepare port official said.
"Based on the manifest, the total number of people on board the boat was 267, including 16 crew members and the skipper," Wahidah, the head of the Parepare Port Administrator's office, said on Monday.
He said the vessel left Parepare port on Saturday and was on its way to Samarinda in East Kalimantan when it capsized in Baturoro waters in the Makassar Strait, West Sulawesi, due to bad weather.
Meanwhile, according to the manifest held by the Navy's Main Base VI in Makassar, the number of passengers was 250 plus 50, including 17 crew and skipper who was identified as Djabir.
In view of the difference in the reported number of people on board the boat, Wahidah said, he believed his data were more valid because they were from Parepare port that the boat had left and Parepare port was also where the boat crew had completed their travel documents.
Up till Monday evening (Jan 12), only 22 people from the ill-fated boat had been saved, according to Wahidah.
"Until now, there has been no report of more people from the KM Teratai Prima having been found. Meanwhile, search and rescue teams, including from the National Defense Forces and the National Police Headquarters, have arrived to take part in the efforts to find more of the people who were on the boat," he said.
He said he had already coordinated with local hospitals in case survivors from the shipwreck needed intensive treatment, adding a rescue command post had also been set up in the Parepare port area.
