GRESIK STUDENTS PRAY FOR PAPUA, PALESTINE

Gresik, Indonesia, Jan. 13 (ANTARA) - Some 800 students of kindergarten and elementary schools in Gresik, East Java, here on Tuesday, staged a rally and offered prayers for the victims of earthquakes in Papua Province, and for the Palestinian victims of Israeli military aggression.

"By offering these prayers, we hope to lessen the sufferings of our brothers and sisters in Papua which was hit by earthquakes, and in Palestine which is being invaded by the Israeli Zionists," the principal of Yimmi elementary school, Abdul Yamin, said.

"Innocent and ignorant children have also become victims of the disasters in Papua and Palestine," a teacher said.

Meanwhile, in Pangkalpinang (Bangka Belitung Province), on Monday (Jan. 12), the Indonesian Mujahidin Council (MMI) expressed disappointment about the UN Resolution 1860 for being ineffective in stopping the Israeli military aggression in the Gaza Strip.

"Since the beginning, we were knew that the UN Resolution would not be implemented by Israe, because the Israeli attacks in Gaza is an international conspiracy to destroy the centers of the Islamic power such as in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Palestine," Bangka Belitung's MMI coordinator, Gunawan, said in Pangkalpinang on Monday.

"This is proof that the Israeli invasion into Gaza is the result of an international conspiracy among Israel, the US and Britain, to conduct ethnic cleansing in Gaza," he said.

Therefore, as long as Israeli was waging war in Palestine, MMI would not stop recruiting 'mujahidin' soldiers willing to be sent to Palestine, especially to support Hamas' struggle against the Zionists, he said.

In Biak Numfor District, Papau Province, on Monday (Jan. 12), some 200 members of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the local Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), staged a rally to protest the Israeli invasion in Gaza, which had claimed the lives of more than 900 Palestinians and injured almost 4,000 others, including children and women.

"Muslims are urged to unite and offer prayers as well as humanitarian aid to our brothers and sisters in Palestine, who have become victims of Israeli soldiers' brutality," Muhammad Adnan, chairman of the Biak MUI, said.

Similar anti-Israel protests were also held by local mass organizations and political parties in Mataram (West Nusa Tenggara) and Pamekasan (East Java), last Monday.

Indonesian journalists in Medan (North Sumatra), Surabaya (East Java), Bogor and Bandung (West Java Province) also staged anti-Israeli demonstrations on Monday.

In Medan, tens of pressmen staged a rally in front of the US consulate general to condemn the killing of Fadal Shana (23), a television journalist working for Reuters, by Israel in the Gaza Strip.

Amrizal, the rally's coordinator, said that Israel had clearly violated the international press law by shooting the journalist to death.

Israel was not only committing gross human right violations, but also trying to stop the work of journalists who were neutral in covering the invasion, he said.

The international world must condemn Israel for committing war crime, bring the Zionist state to the International Court, and give a severe sanction on Israel, he said.

The US should also be held fully responsible for supporting the brutal Israeli attacks, he said.
"We urge all international press organizations to bring Israel to the International Court for committing war crimes," Amrizal said.

The journalists threw rotten eggs at Israeli flags in the rally.
