Bahrain's human rights efforts highlighted

Moscow, May 3 (BNA): A Bahraini post graduate student at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, Amani Al-Hadad, highlighted Bahrain's implementation of its international commitments on the protection of the right against torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and punishment. This came during Al-Hadad's participation in the 14th International Conference on International Law and Human Rights. The Peoples' Friendship University of Russia organised the conference in Moscow in the presence of international professors and experts in international law and human rights. Bahrain charge d’ affaires Salman Al-Shalaan was also present. Al-Hadad reviewed the unprecedented steps taken by Bahrain in the field of human rights under the reform project of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. She said that Bahrain was among the first countries in the region have accepted the Universal Periodic Review. She gave an overview of Bahrain's key achievements in this area, including legal amendments to the Penal Code, establishment of the Ombudsman Office, Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission, Special Investigation Unit and the National Institution for Human Rights.
