GOVT DEEPER INTO DEFICIT TO FUND GROWTH

While risking a larger budget deficit, the government experts hefty spending on stimulus packages will help sustain economic growth. After a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, acting Coordinating Minister for the Economy Sri Mulani Indrawati laid out this year's revised state budget assumptions to be submitted to law-makers soon for approval.

SUBSIDY OF PREMIUM GASOLINE TO BE REMOVED FROM 2009 STATE BUDGET

For the first time in the history of the Republic, the government removes subsidy allocation for premium gasoline from the State Budget. By doing so, the fuel subsidies amounting Rp57.6 trillion allocated in the 2009 State Budget will only be for diesel oil and kerosene.

ISRAELI SOLDIERS DESERTED

Ten Israeli soldiers preferred to be in jail for 14 days rather than joining the war in Gaza. This is the first desertion case which has occurred since Israel's military aggression in Gaza, on December 27, 2008. "To follow the conscience", the soldiers said as quoted by Ma'an News Agency, on Tuesday (Jan. 13).
